| The Van Zandt County Humane Society is
committed to the rehabilitation and socialization of all
animals in our care.
We adopt only companion animals and reserve the right
to refuse adoptions that do not meet our adoption
criteria or acceptable exceptions.
Each animal in our care is fostered at the home of
the foster parent and is socialized for family life.
They remain in foster care until adoption. Many of our
animals are housebroken or easily trained.
Animals are not articles of clothing to be thrown out
once they are no longer in style. They are able to bond
deeply with their families and they deserve the same
devotion from you. Adding a four-legged family member
means making a lifelong commitment, which can easily be
10-15 years for dogs and up to 20 years for cats.
Dogs and cats are not right for every home. Problems
such as allergies, apartment restrictions or moving
issues should be discovered before adopting your new
pet. Large dogs may be too strong or active for small
children. Small pets may be too delicate for children.
Once you have made the right choice for you, obedience
train your dog and make an effort to really understand
cat behavior. Basic training helps you communicate
better with your pets and strengthens the human-animal
bond.
Make sure the pet suits your lifestyle. Dogs require
daily exercise and attention, and the size of the dog
should be considered, since a large active dog may not
be suitable for a small apartment.
A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS
1.) My
life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from
you is likely to be painful.
2.) Give
me time to understand what you want of me.
3.) Place
trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4.) Don't
be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as
punishment. You have your work, your friends, your
entertainment, but I have only you.
5.) Talk
to me. Even though I don't understand your words, I do
understand your voice when speaking to me.
6.) Be
aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7.) Before
you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could
bite hard enough to break bones, and yet, I choose not
to bite you.
8.) Before
you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask
yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm
not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too
long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9.) Please
take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10.) On
the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never
say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this
alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there,
because I love you so.
Our adoption fees are $60.00 for dogs and puppies and
$60.00 for cats and kittens.
Special adoption rates apply if two or more pets are
adopted together.
